European Delegation Visits Standard Energy Through INNOPOLIS Partnership Program

As the global transition to artificial intelligence accelerates, electricity demand is expected to rise sharply around the world.

Ensuring that power can be supplied reliably, when and where it is needed, while maintaining grid stability has therefore become a growing concern for governments and energy industries worldwide.

Against this backdrop, Standard Energy welcomed trade officials from major European embassies in Korea and representatives from the energy industry to its facilities in Daejeon on September 9.

The visit was organized as part of the “2026 INNOPOLIS – Europe Innovation Partnership Day,” hosted by the INNOPOLIS Foundation.

Standard Energy has worked with the foundation on a range of technology-commercialization initiatives, including the 2026 Regional Innovation Demonstration Scale-up Program.

More than 20 participants attended the visit, including representatives from the Delegation of the European Union to Korea and the French and German embassies.

The delegation visited Standard Energy’s Vanadium Ion Battery Energy Storage System, or VIB ESS, demonstration site at KAIST’s Munji Campus before touring the company’s automated production line at its headquarters.

The program gave participants an opportunity to review both the demonstration status of VIB technology and Standard Energy’s progress toward commercialization.



 Strong Interest in Non-Lithium, High-Power Energy Storage

During the visit, representatives were introduced to the structural characteristics and operating advantages of Standard Energy’s Vanadium Ion Battery, or VIB.

Particular attention was given to the use of a non-flammable aqueous electrolyte, as well as the technology’s long service life, high-power performance, rapid charge-discharge capability and flexibility across a range of operating environments.

Participants also showed strong interest in how VIB’s high-power and fast-response characteristics could be applied to emerging power challenges associated with the expansion of AI data centers.

As AI computing expands, electricity demand is increasing not only in scale but also in complexity.

Power systems must be able to respond to rapid changes in demand while maintaining reliable operation and grid stability.

This is increasing attention on energy storage systems as flexible power resources that can complement conventional grid infrastructure.



 ESS as a Flexible Resource for a Changing Power System

Expanding electricity demand and maintaining grid stability will require continued investment in power infrastructure, including transmission networks.

At the same time, ESS is increasingly being considered as a flexible resource that can help reduce pressure on grid expansion and improve the efficiency of existing power infrastructure.

The transition toward more distributed power systems is also accelerating as renewable generation expands and electricity is increasingly produced and consumed closer to where it is generated.

In this environment, energy storage can play a broader role in improving grid efficiency and responding to applications that require high power and rapid response.

Standard Energy sees VIB ESS as a technology that can support applications including grid-forming ESS, AI data-center power infrastructure and ultra-fast EV charging.

Its combination of fire safety and high-power performance is particularly relevant for environments where conventional energy-storage systems face constraints related to installation location, response speed or operating conditions.



 V-Line Tour Highlights Progress Toward Commercialization

Following the VIB ESS demonstration-site visit, the European delegation toured V-Line, Standard Energy’s automated production line.

Visitors reviewed the company’s automated cell-production process and discussed Standard Energy’s progress in establishing a production system for VIB technology.

Participants also asked about future production plans, potential deployment of VIB ESS in Europe and opportunities for collaboration with European partners.

The discussions reflected growing interest not only in the technical characteristics of VIB, but also in its transition from technology development and demonstration toward commercial production and deployment.



 Supporting Power Infrastructure for the AI Era

The rapid expansion of AI is placing new demands on electricity infrastructure.

AI data centers require large amounts of power while also creating a growing need for infrastructure capable of responding quickly to fluctuations in electricity demand.

Standard Energy believes energy storage will become increasingly important as power systems adapt to these changes.

VIB ESS is designed to combine fire safety with high-power and fast-response performance, characteristics that could enable energy storage to play a wider role in managing power demand and supporting grid stability.

Kim Sung-jin, Head of Technology Business at Standard Energy, said:

“This visit was a meaningful opportunity to show internationally how Vanadium Ion Battery ESS, with its strengths in safety and high-power performance, can contribute to addressing the rapid growth in electricity demand and the broader challenge of the energy transition in the AI era.”

“We will continue to accelerate the commercialization of VIB technology through partnerships in Korea and abroad, while exploring ways to contribute to the global response to climate change and the transition toward more reliable and sustainable energy systems.”
